Proof of Concept

For this project my goal was to try out a new tool or language, in preparation for AmiGameJam 2024. I normally use AMOS or Blitz but not this time. I looked at a handful of different tools, like CanDo, 3D Construction Kit and Scorpion Engine. They are all great tools but they have their drawbacks.

Scorpion Engine is great but not for me, because it's a PC software. Half the fun is using an Amiga when creating the game. And the "market" is flooded with games created with Scorpion Engine so... Nope.

CanDo and 3D Construction Kit have user unfriendly interfaces. I tried them, I really did. This is a big drawback when using old software, the user interfaces are very often unfriendly. Too bad, CanDo looks very powerful.

Then I got the idea to try out Scala. I have used it before so I really like it. Easy to use, very stable and almost never gurus. And to save time I used an old story from my previous game 'Adventure 2', a text adventure.

But even with a great software as Scala there are some drawbacks when used as a game creator. The two biggest are:

- An object can change visually when you click on it but not when you hoover over it. Makes gameplay a little harder.

- Not possible to hide object(s) on a slide. If an action should revel an object then you have to use two slides. One without the object and another with the object, and switch slides when the action is performed. So you end up with many slides. Makes game creation a little harder.

Will I use Scala as a game creator again? Yes, I will probably use it for AmiGameJam 2024.
